The July 2008 Edition of PC Gamer (issue #176) has been released. I found my copy at Borders down the street. In this issue, you can find a review of Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures, which was released on May 20th, but more importantly, a code for the in game item “Totem of the Origins”.
I found my copy wrapped up on the shelf along with some unwrapped copies. I’m thinking some people could have been getting into these and copying down the codes; so I certainly chose an un-tampered copy. On the front, there is the usual Conan graphic that we’ve been seeing on a lot of the released material. You can see Conan’s bloody sword cutting through the PC GAMER logo; kinda cool. As well, you see an ad at the top announcing the “Free Age of Conan In-Game Item Only in PC Gamer! Unique Code Printed Inside”.
On the back cover of the wrapping, there is a table of contents for the included DVD; apparently some AoC material. We’ll review this to see if it is anything new. Also, more information regarding the In-Game Item: It is the “Totem of the Origins” and “This artifact allows its user magical transportation back to his or her home city.” Why is this not just called Totem of Origins? Oh well…
Unpacking this issue, the front cover is identical to what is printed on the wrapping, and you will find the DVD with additional content. I found that the AoC videos on the DVD have all been released elsewhere; nothing new here.
You will find in the table of contents, that the AoC review is on page 20. Skipping over there, the initial image is taken from the “Art of Hyboria” book included in the Collector’s Edition (which I have also reviewed). The Subtitle is as such:
M-rated content. DirectX 10 graphics. No elves, no orcs-just Robert E. Howard’s carnage-strewn vision writ large. From its announcement nearly five years ago, Age of Conan has promised radical departures from current MMOs. Does it deliver? We found out.
You will find your in game code at the bottom of Page 25:

Here is a close up of the code box at the bottom of page 25, it is a 16 digit alpha-numeric code:

After entering your code (go to http://register.ageofconan.com/) you will be able to view all upgrades to your account.
You can see here the icon for the totem (in addition to other upgrades to this account. You will then be able to acquire your in-game item from within AoC by using the /claim command. As I understand it, you can claim these items for any character created by your account; furthermore, there are reports of people deleting an in-game item and then being able to re-acquire it with the same command (useful, I guess if you’re limted on bag space!).
