To all the Windows Mobile Fanboys

This is a confession of sorts. Set me in that little booth with the priest for a moment and let me spill my guts.

I used to be an Apple hater…

I spent hours upon hours over the past two or three years fussing with two separate Windows Mobile phones. My first foray was with the $400 (at the time) HTC Tilt and then when I was pissed off enough and I thought, “maybe it’s just this crappy phone, I spent another $400 for an HTC Fuze.

Sure, I was theoretically able to do some cool things, like manage my Windows Home Server from my phone (when I could get it to work), and then I sure enjoyed the hours of research trying to figure out how to set my phone up as a Sideshow Gadget (which never worked btw). But what I really enjoyed (sarcasm) was the fact that the stupid piece of shit could barely place a fucking phone call. Yes… these are supposed to be cell phones after all, yet you would think that my $400 hunk of junk had a sense of humor by playing “April Fool’s” with me 365 days a year by displaying a phone keypad and then laughing at me as tried to do something basic like dial a freaking local number.

Well, the real “last straw” is the fact that Microsoft could give a shit less about any customer requests. I had followed this thread for over a year regarding syncing Windows Live Calendar with a Windows Mobile device. That post on 10/10/2009 is from me. And there are multiple threads like this all over the internet. Seriously guys… SYNCING A FUCKING CALENDAR TAKES TECHNOLOGY FROM ABOUT 20 YEARS AGO!!!

So, I got frusted one day as I missed yet another meeting because I “forgot” and would have loved some reminder from the $400 laughing skull in my pocket and decided to buy an iPhone and just give it a whirl. I would have spent the full $700 but my contract with AT&T was up and so I got a 32GB iPhone 3Gs with a few hundred dollars off.

I wish I had the time to do a full review, though frankly there are a ton of them already on the internet. So let me cut to the chase. Within minutes, I had a working phone (yes, my first concern was a FUCKING phone that could actually dial and recieve PHONE CALLS!) that also synced all my contacts, mail, calendar with a Google account (ironlically through MICROSOFT Exchange…). I was downloading free apps left and right, syncing Podcasts, and generally having fun using my new toy, yet revelling in the fact that I finally have a useful gadget to help me do business.

Next thing I’m doing, putting up my old phones AND my fussy Zune (a whole ‘nother story) on Ebay… should I say “sorry” to the poor chap who bids on these?

So, the moral of the story: I think I’ve learned a very important lesson. I’m not going to say that I’m exclusively buying Apple stuff from here on (at this time, I am still a happy “Windows” user in general), but I’m not going to be a Microsoft fanboy any longer. If there is a competing product that seems to be doing well, I’m going to check it out, and I suggest you do the same. I think you’ll be happier in the end.
